When we return to the body, we return to the wider body of the earth,

we experience belonging and this returns us to community”.

This retreat has at its heart the cacao ceremony, a ritual art around which to gather with the wider intention of building community, enabling belonging, and fostering connection back to the earth together.

The retreat will be a combination of cacao ceremony, embodying nature practices, ceremonial song, dance and creativity.

We welcome and actively encourage diverse communities and multicultural people to come and join us in this work. Both Marcela and Gemma are displaced uprooted people, women who lost their land, their families and their sense of belonging in different ways. We are both very interested in how to re-root, how to belong, how to find our voice and honour our experience when so much has been lost, colonised and displaced. We reach out to people who might resonate with this and who would also like to explore how we can rebuild, how we can make sense of our lives here, where we are, in this body, on this land, with these people.

Marcela Enriquez Wakeham

Is in an active process of tracing back and reclaiming her Yaqui Indigenous roots, she consciously decided to carry and remember her ancestral knowledge from her blood family linage living in the Sonora desert in Mexico, she is in commitment with the Great Spirit to spread the Mexika/Anahuaca wisdom into these times.

Gemma Mallol

Is re-tracing her own ancestry and her relationship with land, community, identity and belonging. From Spanish, German Jewish and White South African roots her family’s story is one of displacement and migration. We are displaced people scattered all over the world, now including Japanese and Philipino family in our tribe. Her sense of belonging was really confused after being sent to boarding school in the UK at the age of 6 after being uprooted from her original family home in Ibiza. Her search for home and belonging has been an ongoing theme of her life and she has lived for extensive periods all over the world looking for home. She has now lived in Totnes, Devon for 10 years and her roots are growing from cultivating a relationship with the earth.

Gemma is a Senior Yoga and Mindfulness Teacher and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (body orientated trauma therapy) .

Gemma and Marcela have been teaching, working and exploring intensively together since 2008.
